It’s important to understand that there are several treatment options available in the market which may achieve similar results from the ones listed here. This article is also not meant to suggest that the treatments we offer are the only sole or best options.
Fillers or Botulinum Toxin. We must first understand that fine lines and wrinkles are a normal part of ageing.
Typically formed due to the natural degradation of elastin and collagen fibres as we age, these are harmless and don’t need to be removed unless you want to.
In case you do, two of the non-surgical, longer-lasting options you have are Botulium Toxin injections and dermal fillers.
Like any procedure, which one will work for you best will depend on many factors. Here’s a lowdown on these cosmetic treatments to help you decide which one to go for.
Botulinum Toxin injections and dermal fillers are injectable medical treatments that work to diminish or treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face.
These include forehead wrinkles, those between and around the corners of the eyes, among other areas.
These toxins, at a safe level, work by inhibiting the contraction of muscles which results in temporary flaccid paralysis.
Put simply, Botulinum Toxin injections relax and prevent the muscles from moving, so they are ideal for stopping dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and bunny lines from forming.
Botulinum Toxin injections can also treat teeth grinding, excessive sweating, and other health conditions.
As the name suggests, dermal fillers or soft tissue fillers work by ‘filling in’ folds, creases, and areas that have lost volume from ageing-related collagen loss, such as around the cheeks, lips, and around mouth.
Thus, while Botulinum Toxin is a great choice to treat dynamic wrinkles, fillers are best for deep lines that are present even without muscle movement.
Per the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAOS), both Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers are effective and produce their intended results.
However, the efficacy of these treatments depends on the individual’s unique reaction to the botulinum toxin, the type of filler used, and how well the aftercare instructions were followed.
While fillers show instant results, it takes an average of 1-2 weeks to integrate with the surrounding tissues, producing a more natural, ‘stabilised’ look.
On the other hand, the effects of Botulinum Toxin take 3-5 days to kick in, and most people see their desired results after just a single successful session.
It depends.
Botulinum Toxin results can last around 3-6 months for most people.
On the other hand, dermal fillers’ results can last from 4 months to 2 years, depending on the type. Here are some common types of dermal fillers and their estimated longevity:
Both Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers available in the market have been tested extensively and are FDA-approved.
The side effects of Botulinum Toxin are usually just reactions to the injection itself and not toxic reactions. Some of the adverse reactions you may experience include pain, bruising and swelling at the injection sites.
But more severe side effects can occur from an improper injection, too. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any eye dryness, a crooked smile, drooling, a drooping eyelid, or trouble seeing, speaking, and breathing.
For dermal fillers, side effects are likelier because these are injected into the blood vessels, blocking the blood supply to the areas identified.
Some severe side effects to watch out for include blindness, skin necrosis, and an unnatural appearance (uneven surface and lumpiness) caused by fillers left ‘undissolved.’
Hence, it is crucial to visit a professionally-certified aesthetic doctor that has experience with injectables.
In Singapore, Botulinum Toxin injections run around $300 to $1000 depending on the area being treated and the amount of dose used.
Small areas like the corner of the mouth (frown lines) and the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet) would take about 10 -20 units per area, while wider areas, like the forehead, take about 10-50 units.
On the other hand, dermal fillers cost from $700 to $2000 depending on the brand, type, and number of syringes needed to achieve your goals.
To recap, both Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers are safe, effective, long-lasting, and show instant results.
While dermal fillers tend to be more expensive, they also generally last longer. Some may think that fillers produce a more natural look, but an experienced doctor can get you very natural results with Botulinum Toxin as well.
Before making a decision, keep in mind that both Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers solve different problems and are used in different areas—dynamic wrinkles need Botulinum Toxin while lines at rest need fillers.
Also, your needs and goals are unique, so whether Botulinum Toxin or dermal filler is right for you depends on your areas of concern. You may not even need either of them!
In fact, the best way to avoid any adverse side effects from Botulinum Toxin and fillers is to get it done by a qualified doctor.
